Grays Court
The cobbled courtyard belonging to Grays Court at the junction of Chapter House Street and Ogleforth constitutes one of the most picturesque and unspoiled corners of York. Facing the courtyard entrance is Grays Court itself, one of the most historic buildings in England.
This ancient house was the residence of the Treasurers of York Minster from the 11th century until the latter was despoiled by Henry V111 in 1547. From 1788 to 1945 it was the home of the distinguished York family, the Grays from whom the name is derived. It was sold to the Dean & Chapter of York Minster in 1945 who in turn sold it to its present owners in 2005.
The house enjoys the only private access from the City Bar Wall by a staircase which has recently been restored. Steps lead down to the upper terrace which nestles against the Wall and from there a further flight leads down to the lawn.
Surrounded by borders of flowers and shrubs, our visitors are welcome to sit and relax and enjoy the excellent fare from our café. The glory of our garden so close to the City centre never fails to delight.
Have your wedding at Grays Court and you are not simply using the historic property as a backdrop for the event; you are making it yours for the day. Our catering standards are of a recognised high standard and ensure that the quality of the setting is reflected in the food and service. We can recommend set menus or work through the most exacting requirements and bespoke menus directly with the client.
Guests are welcomed in the lower gallery and reception drinks are held in the 85ft oak paneled Long Gallery, the Sterne Room, Bow Room, Library or Minster Room which can accommodate up to 100 guests for the wedding breakfast. It is also possible to hold your civil ceremony in the Summer House in our gardens.
Grays Court offers an unforgettable venue for weddings and celebrations and we offer a bespoke planning service for your important day. The whole house can be available exclusively for your wedding reception for up to 100 guests guaranteeing a unique occasion in historic surroundings.
